A circular crop needs transparency outside the circle to look right on any background, and PNG is the format that supports that. Square crops are also exported as PNG for consistency.
The photo is first centre-cropped to a square, then a circular clipping path is applied on the canvas so only the pixels inside the circle are kept — everything outside becomes transparent.
512px covers most platforms (LinkedIn, X, Discord, WhatsApp) comfortably. Use 1024px if you want extra headroom for platforms that display a larger avatar, or 128px for a smaller footprint.
