It uses an on-device AI model that runs entirely inside your browser via WebAssembly, so your photo never leaves your device — the only thing downloaded is the model itself, once.
The AI model (a few megabytes) has to download and load into your browser the first time. After that, it's cached, so later background removals on the same device are noticeably faster.
Photos with a clear subject and reasonable contrast against the background — portraits, products and similar subjects work well. Very busy or low-contrast scenes may give a less clean result.
