The image is downsized for speed, then every pixel is grouped into buckets of similar shades. The largest buckets — the colours that cover the most of the image — are averaged and shown as swatches, ranked by how much of the photo they cover.
No — the image is read and analysed entirely in your browser using the Canvas API. It's never sent to a server.
The tool highlights the colours that cover the most area, so a small accent or tiny detail may not make the top 8 if it's a small fraction of the image.
