About character counter
Character and word limits are everywhere: SMS, social posts, meta descriptions, exam answers and application forms. This guide explains what is counted and why different tools give different totals.
Characters, words and sentences
Characters with spaces is the figure most platforms use. Characters without spaces is useful for some word-count rules. Words are groups of text separated by whitespace, and sentences are detected by . ! ? and the Hindi danda (।). Paragraphs are blocks separated by a blank line.
Why Hindi, Gujarati and emoji need care
Many simple counters count code units rather than what a reader sees, so a single emoji or a conjunct letter in Hindi or Gujarati can be counted as two or more. This tool counts characters as people see them, so it matches what you expect on screen. Some platforms count differently, so treat the platform's own counter as the final word when you are close to a limit.
Handy reference limits
- A single SMS holds 160 characters in the basic alphabet and fewer when it contains Hindi or Gujarati text.
- Search results usually show about 155 to 160 characters of a meta description and around 60 of a title.
- Reading time here is estimated at 200 words a minute, a comfortable pace for most adults.
Your text stays with you
Counting happens live in your browser and nothing is stored, so it is safe for drafts and personal text.
